Ramp up job-hunting now before Christmas to gift yourself a new job come 2026

Recruiters say now is the opportune time to ramp up job-hunting. Entering the tail end of the year, many jobseekers will quit the search. Pausing the job-hunt with the assumption companies won’t take on new hires as the festive season approaches. But Recruiters say while many employers are wrapping up - an urgent hiring spree often ensues around this time. Budgets need spending and roles rapidly need to be filled before they go on leave.

Suddenly the year end is upon us. Undoubtedly for many of us, also accompanied by that slump feeling of T.I.R.E.D. Those actively job-hunting may feel the same about their attempts to find a new job. While most jobseekers will now throw in the proverbial towel, you should instead be intensifying your efforts.

“Clients and companies are trying to wrap up their recruitment for the year so they can fill their budgets with new hires for January/Feb and even March some years. November and December are great times to start searching for jobs. It’s like a mad rush to get that special Xmas present your child wanted that will be sold out if you wait too long to get to the shops,” explains Senior Datafin Recruiter Michelle Roberts.

She added that Hiring Managers are “eager” to fill outstanding or critical roles quickly before taking leave. This is to ensure new staff can hit the ground running when work commences in the new year.

It may surprisingly be beneficial to ramp up your job-hunting now over the slow-down period. These could include that you might only have to resign in January and can still secure your December bonus.

Datafin Co-owner Lindy Sollinger says, “most companies are happy with a Feb 2026 start”.

“…so you can secure a job in December and enjoy Christmas knowing there is something wonderful to look forward to in the new year, resign in Jan and start early Feb!”

According to ChatGPT, getting employed before Christmas could result in a more low-key and relaxed onboarding process. The chance to establish a connection with new colleagues and teammates – and make a lasting impression.

Chance to onboard quietly: Many teams slow down in December, which means you can settle in, learn systems, and build relationships before the new year rush.

Holiday goodwill: Teams tend to be more relaxed and social — it’s actually a great time to join and make a positive impression.

The AI tool also offers these practical tips when continuing your job search during the holiday season.

  • Update your LinkedIn — Recruiters are still active even when offices are quieter.
  • Set up job alerts so you don’t miss pre-Christmas postings.
  • Keep your interview availability open — flexible candidates get ahead.
  • Mention in cover letters that you’re available to start before or just after the holidays — this can give you an edge.

We acknowledge that at this time of the year job-hunting is the last thing you want to be engaging in. But placing your job search on hold could cost you that dream job you’ve been longing for.

Roberts reiterated this sentiment by saying “there is nothing worse than taking a pause this time of year and missing out on what could be the best present to yourself over the festive season. To get that new exciting career at the amazing company you have had your eye on for so long.”
