Join an interdisciplinary data intensive research team with the opportunity to travel elsewhere on the African continent and abroad as the next Data Scientist sought by a cutting-edge tech company offering tailored software solutions. Your role will include writing and executing code to automate data cleaning, integration and data analysis. The ideal candidate will have data analysis skills but must have demonstrated practical experience both the broader agricultural sector but also in manipulating and managing data in biological/agricultural systems.
Data Cleaning, Consolidation, Ingestion/Uploading and Analysis (50%) –
Support team members with the cleaning and documentation of multi-locational (international) crop genomic and trial data and consolidate all the data and associated metadata on the GEMShareTM platform.
Conduct basic analyses on data. Write routine summary reports on results of work and confer with supervisors on the integration of data and avenues of investigation.
Modify or develop new data cleaning and query protocols, maintain and adapt GEMSToolsTM knowledge base, in conjunction with developers.
Execute analytic queries, visualizations and analysis using methods created according to previously published methods.
Research collaboration (20%) –
Work collaboratively with researchers, developers and project partners to accelerate the achievement of the respective project objectives.
Work both independently and in large, multidisciplinary groups, based at Stellenbosch University, regionally and internationally.
Be willing to travel to Malawi and the U.S.
Skills development and training (10%) –
Help design, plan, implement and evaluate novel approaches to data skills development of staff and students at South African and Malawian tertiary institutions.
Provide guidance to Stellenbosch researchers and project partners on data cleaning, ingestion integration and basic analytical challenges.
Analysis of workflow documentation and Manuscript Writing (15%) –
Develop technical documentation on datasets and contribute to the development of the GEMSTM data ingestion protocol and analytical toolkit.
Contribute to project formulation and drafting of project proposals.
Honours Degree in the Life Sciences, Computational Sciences or Engineering.
Significant experience working in biological/agricultural systems.
Programming in Python and familiarity with SQL databases.
Experience with ArcGIS or QGIS.
Extensive experience in managing data in Excel.
Must be able to identify, clean and ingest data into a database in a replicable way.
Experience working with data from economics, plant protection, genomics, genetics, or breeding fields.
Data modelling skills are highly desirable.
Must be able to function as part of an interactive team while demonstrating self-initiative to achieve project’s goals and the group’s mission.
Excellent oral and written English communication and interpersonal skills.
