This Cape Town based telecoms company requires a Software Architect / Line Manager for the architecture and quality of all artefacts produced by the team (technical architect) and recruiting, training and managing team members (line management) with adequate skills to satisfy business strategy. Must have had experience in a Line Management role. Must have a background in structured software development lifecycle processes. It is important that you are able to explain intricate technical issues in a simple logical fashion.
DUTIES:
1. People Management. Ensure the availability of skilled and knowledgeable resources to meet project requirements.
2. Draft job specifications and job descriptions in accordance with requirements.
3. Motivate new employee requirements based on requests from Account Managers provided there is sufficient revenue and budget to justify.
4. Participate in the recruitment process ensuring the technical proficiency of future employees.
5. Orientation of new resources ensuring that they become productive as soon as possible.
6. Training and Development.
7. Performance management.
8. Gather input from other parties as input into performance review process.
9. Ensuring that employees meet SLA’s
10. Drive warranty work down to below target levels by ensuring that the quality of output of employees is high.
11. Ensure there are resources available to deal with any production emergency as and when it arises.
12. Ensure the quality and technical integrity of the systems components under control
13. Ultimately responsible for the development of software at the right quality according to the estimated timeframes, but not responsible for managing dependencies external to the team.
14. Interact with Account managers, Project managers and Solutions architects the feasibility and effort of development. Perform commercial effort estimates and communicate high level risk.

20. Manage and plan leave ensuring project commitments are met.
21. Manage and motivate employees to deliver features according to release plans
22. Technical Architecture
23. Final design and architecture authority for components / systems under control. Drive long term architectural strategy and assure compliance by dev teams.
Requirements
1. Engineer or computer science degree. Post graduate qualification advantageous.
2. 8+ years IT development experience
3. Experienced in working with large and complex systems
4. Background in structured software development lifecycle processes.
5. In depth technical knowledge on a wide range of technologies: Java, .NET, Perl etc
6. In depth technical knowledge of the following enterprise architecture concepts: SOA, application server environments, weblogic.
7. In depth technical knowledge of the following Interface protocols: Corba WebServices (SOAP, text HTTP).
8. Previous experience with large application design: > 1 million transactions per hour OLTP system.
9. System analysis experience advantageous.
10. Hands on approach to problem solving.
11. Excellent problem solving skills.
12. Excellent communication skills, written, verbal and listening.
13. Leadership and development of people.
14. Exceedingly technically competent. Need to be technically respected by the team.
15. Need to be able to explain intricate technical issues in a simple logical fashion.
16. Need to communicate on technical strategy with executives.
17. Working experience in Telecommunications Industry advantageous.
